The World Game - Memories and Rustiness.

I played soccer yesterday, with Tony (a group member) and a few of his mates.  Not since year seven have I played the world game.  I remember back then, I was the “go-to-boy” because I was the only one who can kick straight.   Yes, that definitely demonstrated our lack of talent.  Our team didn’t consist of anyone with a soccer/sports background, other than Daniel Gray (or Danielle Gay, as the bullies called him) and me.  Our team was known as the wooden spooners.  Indeed, that was the case for the majority of the tournament; scorelines of 10-0, 5-0, and even 12-0 were common.  However, we did win one game.  That was against my old school - Woree State School.  We expected another demoralising defeat.  After all, Woree was a school that produced elite athletes and was known for its bad-ass reputation.  Intimidating was synonymous with Woree.  But to the delight of the crowd (about 20 people), it was one of the greatest soccer games during the inter-school sports tournament.  It was a team of unknowns against a team of superiority.  And it was a team of underdogs against a team of great athleticism.  The final score was 2-1, in favour of Bentley Park College (my school at the time).  And yes, I scored those two goals; one went through a sea of legs before hitting the back of the net, causing wild celebrations (Daniel picked me up and hugged me for what seemed an eternity - perhaps the bullies were right about his last name).  We finally had something to smile about.

As for yesterday, it showed that I was rusty in both defence and attack.  I was never a real threat when I was playing in the midfield and forward line; nor was I effective in defence.  As time went by, I noticed my teammates didn’t really pass me the ball anymore.  I guess times have changed.  But in saying that, I almost scored two goals.  In the end, I pulled out due to blisters and a sore knee (from an accidental collision).  I think I prefer my rugby league and touch football.  I asked Tony how I went, and he gave me a 7 out of 10.  Not bad hey?

Famous People.

How many famous people have you seen in person? Today I saw Ivan Henjak (the recently appointed coach of the Brisbane Broncos for 2009) in Harvey Norman. Ever since moving to Brisbane, I have seen the following people:

  • Wayne Bennett. When I used to work at Caltex, he came to refill his car twice. Yes, I served him and he was the usual - quiet and emotionless.
  • Ben Ikin. A former Broncos player, and Wayne Bennett’s son in law. He’s bigger than what he looks on television. He also came into Caltex.
  • Michael Voss. A former Brisbane Lions player and now sports host on Ten News. This was on my way to work at Virgin Mobile.
  • Gorden Tallis. Another former Broncos player. The raging bull, they call him. I saw him at the golden arches in Milton one morning. Everyone wanted a picture and autograph from the big fella.
  • Campbell Newman. The Lord Mayor of Brisbane. Although I’m not sure if politicians should be considered the same status as footballers.

Fantasy NRL Update

My League

This is a public league, which I’m in. As you can see, I’m on top :) But it’s still early days, so hopefully I maintain consistency.

my-rankings.jpg

This is my ranking. As you can see, I’m in the top 500 (overall). Woo! There are still many more games to come, so I can still win the overall prize of $15,000. If not, I just want to win a couple of weeks so I can grab $2000 :)

Random Thoughts.

  • Room two is empty. It won’t be the same anymore. I rather it stay empty than have a new housemate.
  • The reality will definitely hit me more after the 1st of April.
  • Fantasy NRL can be cruel at times (i.e. injuries and last minute team changes).
  • I have three group presentations this semester.
  • Everyday is a long day.
  • To my special person: be strong, stay happy, and we’ll be just fine.
